job search depression

Hey it’s the “Career Hacker” here, Corey Harlock. Author of Find Your DRIVE and Creator of Skills to Achieve.

I want to talk to you about a serious topic… Job Search Depression!

I don’t know if “Job Search Depression” is a clinical term, I don’t know if it’s a diagnosed “thing.”

All I know is that I get a lot of people, whether through my one-on-one coaching clients or people that reach out to me through this blog or attend my live events that are REALLY, REALLY STRUGGLING. (Now I’m not a psychologist or a therapist and I wouldn’t want to insult that community by claiming I was.) But for this article, let’s just call it job search depression.

Are you battling job search depression?

Are you in a “downward spiral?” Is your confidence is low? Are you questioning your self-worth? Are you asking yourself “Why won’t anyone hire me?” Or “Why won’t anyone give me a chance?”

If you answered YES to any (or all) of these questions it’s SUPER IMPORTANT that you deal with these feelings because ultimately they can and will sneak in the back door of your job search.

Everyone I talk to (who’s feeling this way) assures me they would never talk about this stuff in an interview… BUT YOU DO! It’s in the language you use, your posture, the way you react to a tough questions, the way you exhale, your slumped shoulders and the head down, woe is me posture you ahve while sitting in the chair during the interview.

Whether you think it’s affecting you or not, you need to know that the way you feel and your internal dialogue is affecting your interviews.  It does sneak in the back door. It is keeping you from getting hired.

I want to give you some resources to help you deal with Job Search Depression…

Have you ever heard of Brene Brown? I’m a HUGE Fan and she is very popular in our house (and soon to be my neighbor in Houston, Texas… in my dreams).

She is a shame researcher (you can see her Ted Talk here) which is a very interesting thing.

Here are the 2 Brene Brown books that I really recommend.

The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are

Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead

(To be transparent, I need to let you know that these are affiliate links and I will earn 4% of the sale if you purchase one or both of these books using these links.)

These books will help you understand what you’re going through and more importantly… how to get out of it!

Ultimately,  job search depression be the reason you’re still unemployed.  You’re going into interviews and projecting frustration, anger, low confidence and low in self-esteem.

You look like a “victim” of your job search.  Making excuses and placing blame and those things will NEVER get you hired. So please take advantage and learn more about Brene Brown and what she does (she’s incredible)!

I also did an interview with Tim Tyrell-Smyth from Tim’s Strategy a while back and we talked about job search depression ad you can check that out here: GET A NEW JOB BY DEALING WITH YOU PAST WITH TIM TYRELL-SMITH.

My goal today was to give you a ray of hope – something that will help you ad let you know that there is someone out there who knows how you feel. You’re not alone. There are a lot of people out there who feel just like you.
