There is so much career advice out there claiming to help you get your “dream job.”
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but dream jobs are exactly that – a dream.
My dream job would be an actor in Hollywood… no amount of resume writing, job interviewing or career advice on this planet (or any other) will get me there!
When I offer career advice I use my version of the “dream job.” I refer to it as your Ideal Job. A job where you get to do the things you love, meet your needs for career development or work/life balance, get paid what you need to live your current lifestyle and travel as much or little as you want. An ideal job allows you to live your best life.
So here is some career advice for you. My Top 3 things you can do today to target your ideal job.
1. Define your priorities for going to work.
There are only 4 of them so define them and then prioritize them.
Knowing what your priorities are to go to work will help you target a new job that meets your needs or give you a foundation that you can use to start negotiating a new role with your current employer.
2. Know what Leadership Language works best for you.
Managers communicate through 7 different Leadership Languages: communication, accountability, feedback, trust, respect, recognition and trust.
Once you know what your Leadership Language is, you can target your search and interviews to highlight your needs to perform at your optimum level.
3. Connect to your Passion.
Knowing what you love and want to do is the most important aspect of being yourself… on purpose. Once you know what you love and want to do it becomes easy to decide if you should find a new job or change your existing one. CAREER HACK #40 – SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO?
Once you start doing the work and Defining your DRIVE you will start applying to few jobs! You’ll only apply to the jobs that meet your needs which will get you more interviews and more job offers. The key is to streamline your strategy, too much career advice is bad for your career. CAREER HACK #37 – THE GOLF PRINCIPLE
One thing I know is… you can’t trust hiring managers to tell you the truth. Most of the people ask for my career advice because they are in jobs that ended up being much different than the one that was advertised.
Remove the risk and leverage your probability of getting the right job by taking back control.
